Senior Football Championship:

The final round of games in the league stages of this years County Senior Football Championship takes place this coming Saturday and Sunday.

For most of the clubs they know their fate. Stradbally, Clashmore and Kilrossanty have advanced to the quarter finals from group one, while in group two, Ballinacourty, The Nire and An Rinn have qualified for the last eight.

This means that there is just one place in each group up for grabs.  Saint Saviours, Ardmore and Gaultier will be looking for that last place in group one, while in group two, Ballinameela, Brickeys and Rathgormack are vying for the final place.

As things stand Saint Saviours would take the last place in group one, while in group two, Rathgormack would take the place. Gaultier are currently bottom of the pile in group one and in group two its Ballinameela that is at the bottom of the group and both are would have to play off to see which of the two will drop down to the intermediate grade next year, but there still remains a lot of time for everything to change.

On Saturday evening, the six teams in group one will play off at 7pm.

Ardmore have the long journey to the WIT Campus ahead of them to play Saint Saviours, Clashmore play Gaultier at Kill and Stradbally play Kilrossanty at Fraher Field.

On Sunday, games are fixed for 2pm, meaning for many there will be a mad dash to a television after the games for some to see Dublin take on Kerry in the All-Ireland semi Final in Croke Park at 3-30pm.

Ring and Ballinameela make the relatively short journey for both sides to Bushy Park for their game, Ballinacourty and Brickeys also have a short journey to make to Fraher Field for their game, while The Nire have a little to travel to take on Rathgormack at Stradbally.

Up West:

It is a relatively quiet weekend on the Western Front when it comes to the G.A.A. with just a handful of games to be played.

Colligan and Modeligo are set to play this evening in the final of the Junior Football League. When the two sides clashed a few weeks back, it was Colligan that came out on top winning 0-13 to 0-8. This latest game is one that could well go to the wire. Both sides for finishing in the top two places in the league have qualified for the semi finals of the championship.

In the semi finals, they will meet one of the winners of this weekend’s quarter finals. Affane play Tallow in Ballyduff on Friday evening (7-30pm throw in) in the first of the quarter finals. When the sides clashed in the league, it was Affane that came out on top, winning 4-5 to 1-10 and many would expect them to come out on top again in this game.

The second quarter finals sees Old Parish take on the Shamrocks on Saturday evening in Ardmore (6-30pm). These two sides clashed the same weekend that Tallow and Affane played and when they did, it was Old Parish that won 1-8 to 0-10. ‘The Shocks’ when it comes to the championship are there or there about with the past few years and many would love them to win it sooner rather than later. They will go into this game as the slightest of favouriotes, but you can never tell what will happen when it comes to the knockout stages of the championship.

The only other game on this weekend in the West of the county is the Junior ‘Senior Attached’ Football final between Stradbally and Kilrossanty. The game is down for decision on Sunday evening and will be played in Stradbally at 6pm. The two sides have met twice already this year in the championship. When they clashed at Lemybrien it was the home side that won, 2-12 to 0-12 and when they played in Stradbally, it was Kilrossanty that again won, this time on a 0-13 to 0-12 score line. Will Stradbally make it third time lucky?

Down East:

There is a little more activity in the Eastern End of the county this weekend than what there is in the west.

This weekend sees quarter final action in both the Intermediate and Junior Football Championships take place.

On Friday evening, the first of the Junior quarter finals take place when Erin’s Own take on Butlerstown in Clayboy (7pm) and at the same time in Fenor Ferrybank take on Ballyduff Lower.

When the sides clashed in the league section of the competition, Erin’s Own beat Butlerstown 2-11 to 0-8 while Ballyduff Lower beat Ferrybank 0-8 to 1-4.

Also on Friday evening, the semi finals of the Junior ‘B’ Football semi finals are down for decision. Saint Saviours play Tramore in Dunhill at 7pm while De La Salle play Portlaw in Carrigbeg at 8pm.

Friday evening’s round of games are finished off by the meeting of Clonea and Mount Sion on the semi finals of the Junior ‘A’ Hurling championship.

On Saturday evening, the quarter finals of the Intermediate Football Championship will be played.

There is a double header in Kill where John Mitchells take one Tramore at 2-30pm and is followed ninety minutes later with the meeting of Bunmahon and Newtown.

At 4-30pm in Dunhill, Portlaw take on Kilmacthomas and the action comes to a close at 7pm when De La Salle who won the Eastern Championship in 2012 take on Saint Molleran’s at Portlaw.

Fundraiser for Minor Hurlers

Another fundraising night to try and offset the cost of the All-Ireland hurling final will take place on Monday evening with a night at the Local Bar in Dungarvan.

Starting at 8pm, a night of Music and Craic will happen till late. On the night members of the last Waterford Minor team to win the All-Ireland (1948) as well as the last Minor team to appear in a final (1992) will be present on the evening and will interviewed by Kieran O’Connor. This promises to be something special, so get along if you can at all.

Post Match Meal

Win, loose or draw the All-Ireland Minor Final, a post match meal is planned for the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel at Newlands Cross. Tickets for the meal costs €35 each and can be got by contacting County Treasurer 085 1741248 or Patricia Walsh County Bórd na nÓg Secretary 087 2118047.

Camogie

The Waterford Under 16 Camogie team travel to Mallow on Sunday afternoon to play Cork in this years ‘B’ All-Ireland final.

The sides have met in three occasions this year and have resulted in a win for both sides as well as a draw.

The game in Mallow has a 2pm throw in. G.A.A. Supporters in Waterford should try and get to the game if possible as the team deserves all the support they can get.

Underage Hurling Tournaments

It’s a big weekend on the Juvenile Inter County G.A.A. Scene with competition in under 14, 15, 16 and 17 hurling down to be played across Munster.

Dr Harty Cup

The dates for the different rounds in this years Dr Harty Cup were announced recently.

In the first round of games on September 25, there is some exciting games down to be played.

Dungarvan C.B.S. and Blackwater Community School will attract a considerable amount of support while the meeting of St Flannan’s and De La Salle could also attract considerable support.

Other games in the first round of games see Ardscoil Ris take on Hamilton High School from Bandon, last years beaten finalists Our Lady’s from Templemore play Charleville, Gael Choláiste Mhuire take on Doon CBS, Midleton CBS play Nenagh CBS and Clonmel (CBS) High School take on Pobail Scoil na Trionóide from Youghal. Venues for all games are to be confirmed.
