5 goals for Hurney and 5 now through to last eight.

Five sides are through to this Years County Senior Hurling Quarter Finals after the fourth series of games in the league section of the competition was played off over the weekend.

Prior to this weekend both De La Salle and Mount Sion had qualified from their respective groups but they have now been joined by Ballyduff Upper and Fourmilewater from group one, while Passage have leap frogged Mount Sion to top of the pile in group two after this past weekends series of games.

Three games were played on Friday evening.

At Lismore, near neighbours Tallow and Ballyduff Upper took on each other. Both sides went into this game needing to win, which meant that a lively encounter was always going to be on the cards, and credit to both sides, neither disappointed.

Over the course of the hour, the sides were locked together on eleven occasions and taking this into mind, it was no surprise that both sides at the end of sixty minutes of hurling had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Mickey Kearney finished as top scorer in this game for the reds hitting ten of his side’s nineteen points, with Shane Kearney and Kevin Casey hitting three points each.

For the Bride-siders, Paul Kearney was their top scorer, finishing with six of their nineteen scores while Aidan Kearney and Thomas Ryan who both were involved with the Waterford senior hurlers up to this year finished the game with three points each.

At the same time in Fraher Field, An Rinn and Fourmilewater fought out one of the most disappointing games in this year’s championship.

Fourmilewater as they have done in a number of games this year played without a number of players that helped them reach the semi finals of the championship last year.

At the end of a very low key first quarter the trailed two points to one, and at the break they trailed six points to four.

An Rinn lost the services of Donie Breathnach for the second half due to an injury and his absence was felt.

Fourmilewater in the third quarter of the game proved to be slightly the better of the two sides and lead at the three quarter stage mark in the game after Richie Fenton pointed just as the clocked turned forty-five minutes.

With ten minutes to play, An Rinn were in front once more, but they failed to score in these last ten minutes plus the injury time that was played, while Fourmilewater hit seven points to win by six.

In Walsh Park on Friday evening, reigning champions De La Salle kept their 100% record in tact and also secured top spot in group one of this years championship when they beat Lismore 4-12 to 2-12.

The champions lead 2-6 to 0-6 at the break thanks to goals from Adam Farrell and John Mullane. They added a third eleven minutes after the restart through Eoin Madigan but it was cancelled out five minutes later when Maurice Shanahan rattled the De La Salle net.

De La Salle proved to be the slightly the better of the two teams in the closing quarter of the game to run out by six points. Conan Watt and Dave Bennett added late goals for the two respective sides.

Walsh Park hosted two games on Saturday evening, where first up it was the meeting of Passage and Mount Sion.

It was the city side that won the first half, as they lead 1-6 to 1-5 at the break.

It was Eoin Kelly playing against his former club that hit the games first goal of the game when he made no mistake from a twenty metre free after ten minutes, but Mount Sion responded with a goal of their own eight minutes later when Michael Gaffney finished to the net after Richie Roche’s initial effort was saved.

The third quarter proved to be a very even affair which was just shaded by Passage who had managed to go from one point down at half time to end the third quarter locked at 1-10 each.

Mount Sion struck for a well worked goal from Sean Ryan with nine minutes of the hour remaining, but Passage refused to throw in the towel. John Whitty drew a good save from Ian O’Regan. The winners hit points from Pa Walsh, Eoin Kelly and Richard Hurley, and when John Whitty was given another chance to beat Ian O’Regan he made no mistake and his goal helped the men from the Barony area to a 2-15 to 2-12 victory.

The second game saw one of the evening Abbeyside’s Patrick Hurney turned on the style playing against Roanmore, finishing the evening with a staggering 5-2 after his name on the scoreboard which had hurling anoraks in Waterford wondering when was the last time that a played had scored five goals in a senior hurling championship game in Waterford.

Roanmore to their credit were short several first choice players including Gavin O’Brien and the Nolan Brothers who are amongst the city sides most prised assets.

The city side did well in the first half taking everything into account, but trailed 2-12 to 0-10, both of the goals coming from the impressive Patrick Hurney.

He completed his hat-trick ten minutes into the second half and at the end of the third quarter Mark Fives struck for a fourth goal for ‘The Village’ side.

Hurney struck again on fifty three minutes and rounded off a five star performance with a fifth goal two minutes later.

The final game of the weekend saw Ballygunner beat last years beaten finalists Dungarvan 1-19 to 2-13 at Fraher Field.

This was a game that Ballygunner could not afford to loose. They went into the game knowing that if they did lose, they were out of this years championship.

In the first half they turned on the style with Pauric Mahony in fine form, and at the break they lead 1-12 to 0-6, the goal coming late in the first half from Shane O’Sullivan who fired low and hard past Dungarvan’s Darren Duggan.

As the second half went on, Ballygunner pulled up a little especially after Gavin Crotty was sent off on a second yellow card on forty five minutes.

Dungarvan did manage to put in a late fight in an attempt to get something from the game, and even though they struck major scores from Jamie Nagle and Ryan Donnelly, they had left themselves a little too much to do and not enough time to do it.
