Niamh Murphy Hits Eight Points as Waterford Advance to Munster Semi Final

Waterford’s Junior Camogie team are through to a Munster Semi Final against what will be a strong Kerry side after they came out on top with one point to spare in today’s quarter final clash with Clare at Fr. McNamara Park in Ennis.

Waterford manager Kevin Barry assisted by Thomas O’Brien, John Fitzgerald, Michael Power and Mary O’Loughlin on the sideline fielded a team which comprised of some of the counties brightest underage players in the last few years as well as some member of Donal O’Rourke’s senior panel as well as some other experienced players thrown in looked very solid throughout and at the break it looked as if their charges were going to record a big win as they turned around with a five point lead showing on the scoreboard with senior panel member Niamh Murphy accounting for six points of Waterford’s 1-7 to 1-2 lead at the interval.

Right now Camogie in the county thanks to some great work put in by a group of dedicated enthusiast in recent years is very strong and it has to be recorded that it is a fantastic achievement for a county with one of the smallest amount of clubs to pick from to be able to field two adult inter county panels once more this year.

One club that had grown stronger and stronger in recent years is De La Salle and it was one of the city side’s rising starts that finished as top scorer with Niamh Murphy finishing with eight points behind her name on the score sheet.

It was she that opened the scoring in the first minute splitting the posts from a placed ball, but it was cancelled out just three minutes later with an effort from Louise Browne.

Niamh Murphy edged Waterford back in front with another point, again from a placed ball but it was a short lived lead as the home side netted the game’s first goal on seven minutes as top scorer Regan Conway finished past Megan Foran to give her side a 1-1 to 0-2 lead.

Niamh Murphy and Aleisha Malone swapped scores before Shauna Fitzgerald another rising star of the game and Niamh Murphy pointed to level matters with five minutes of the first half showing on the clock.

The impressive Niamh Murphy followed up with a brace of scores to give Waterford a 0-7 to 1-2 lead heading closer to the half time whistle, but Kevin Barry’s side would turn around in an even better position as Saint Anne’s Bronwyn Grace finished to the net for a late goal which gave her side a five point advantage at the break.

Clare were out of the traps first in the second half and cut Waterford’s lead with a point from Kate O’Gorman but when the ball went back up the other end Waterford won a penalty which Aoife Fitzgerald saw saved on the Clare line and deflected out for a ’45 from which Niamh Murphy made no mistake in splitting the Clare uprights, restoring Waterford’s five point half time advantage.

The home side after this came more and more into the game. Regan Conway put over a brace of frees to leave three between the sides and when Kate O’Gorman and Regan Conway followed up there was just the minimum between the sides with time ticking down.

Aoife Fitzgerald and Regan Conway swapped scores to keep just one between the sides in Waterford’s favour with eight minutes of the hour to play and five minutes later Regan Conway once more split to most to tie the scoring.

It is in situations like this that you find out how good a side is. After Clare hit six of the last seven score’s they were getting on top but it was Waterford who showed the greater hunger and with just two minutes to go Niamh Murphy made herself the heroine of the day as it was she who hit the winner, her eight score of the afternoon to secure her side’s passage into the Munster Semi Final against Kerry in the coming weeks.

There Are More Efficient Ways to Running the Caredoc Service

I will make no secret of the fact that I have begun to enjoy listening to Déise Today once more on WLR.fm of late. For many year’s while the late Billy McCarthy presented the show I seldom missed the show each day between 10am and 12 noon and often tuned in again for the re-run after the mid night news up to between 1-30am and 2am to listen again to a debate that I would have found interesting when the programme went out live or maybe to catch something that I might have missed first time around.

I and I know many others after Billy’s death lost interest in the programme slot as under the guidance of new presenter Eamonn Keane the show took a different direction as to what Billy would have presented the programme or indeed Billy’s stand in Maria McCann.

I will admit that I was never a fan of Eamonn’s when he presented on NewsTalk and was even less a fan when he joined WLR. And when before Christmas Eamonn announced that he was leaving WLR for pastures new, or at least to devote more time to other things that he did in his life and Damien Tiernan announced that he was leaving RTE, I felt that he would be a brilliant replacement if the job was not going to be given to someone already working within the Broadcasting Centre.

In the weeks and months since Damien has taken over the microphone at the Broadcasting Centre between 10am and Noon I am starting to enjoy the show once more.

This morning Damien was missing from the slot but the Brilliant Maria McCann who I think is an outstanding presenter especially of what some might call easy going programming was there in his place and had some very interesting slots.

I paid particular attention to the interview that Maria had with a lady from Ballyduff Upper who had reason to call Caredoc for a child that had a high temperature, but she had severe problems in trying to get her call answered at Caredoc’s base in Carlow.

I have in the past suggested a different way of dealing with calls to the out of hours Doctor Service in the South East and will repeat the call now.

I like the lady that was on Deise Today this morning in the past have had reason on many occasions to phone Care Doc and have found it very hard to get an answer at the base, even when I ring shortly after 6pm when we are lead to believe that the Caredoc service starts, and have often found it that the phone is answered quicker later in the evening.

Like the woman on the Radio this morning talking to Maria McCann I have often got an automated message played every two or three minutes telling me that the centre is experiencing a high level of calls and that I am in a cue.

While I would never suggest that the centre would not be getting a high level of calls each evening and over the weekends I find it somewhat strange that so many people ringing the service find it difficult to get through.

I for one have thought to myself is there a better way of dealing with answering the calls and I believe there is.

How many times have you rang a bank, a hospital, the council etc and you get a message telling you to press 1, 2 or 3 etc for the different departments and once you press the relevant number you get through to someone in the department you want to speak to.

Could the same happen when you contact Caredoc. In the South East Region could we have a system whereby you press 1 for County Carlow, 2 for Carlow, 3 for Tipperary, 4 for Waterford, 5 for Wexford and 6 for Wicklow which while not in the South East is in the Caredoc group of counties. The numbers 1 to 6 are assigned to counties written alphabetically.

After press a number from 1 to 6 you would be asked to press a number once more to get through to the centre that you require to visit.

For County Carlow and County Kilkenny because there is only one centre in each county I.E. Carlow Town and Kilkenny City you automatically get through to these centres but for

For County Tipperary: 1 for Cashel, 2 for Clonmel, 3 for Tipperary Town,

For County Waterford: 1 for Dungarvan, 2 for Waterford City,

For County Wexford: 1 for Enniscorthy, 2 for Gorey, 3 for New Ross, 4 for Wexford Town,

For County Wicklow: 1 for Arklow 2 for Wicklow Town

By pressing the relevant number the second time out you get through to that centre and get to speak with a nurse based at that centre, who would have a better idea of any delays which are happening and advise people who ring up as to what time they should call. At present while those in the centre in Carlow are doing their best, they cannot know of delays that are happening in Clonmel, Dungarvan, Waterford City, New Ross etc unless they are informed by the centre.

I believe that if there was a system like this in place it would have made it easier for the likes of the lady on Déise Today this morning to get her sick child to see a Doctor when she needed one.

You don’t need me to tell you that in the next month we will have local elections take place in the country, and I know that some of those standing in the different areas of Waterford from time to time check what I have to say on here, or at least are getting feedback from others that are reading what I have to say.

Therefore can I suggest that any councillor that is looking for a vote or anyone standing who is not at present a councillor might make a pledge to work for changes to be made in the way calls to the Caredoc Service are answered. I don’t think it would take a great deal of money to set up such a service and whatever extra it might cost to run the service would be seen as money well spent by the people of the South East region who use the Caredoc service.

Five Star Déise Bang Five Goals to Reach League Final

Waterford Senior Ladies Football team are through to a first Division Two National League Final for the first time since 1986 after they overcame the challenge of Cavan in the second of this year’s semi finals played at Banagher in glorious sunshine this afternoon running out winners with 13 points to spare at the end of the hour.

The same two sides clashed at the same stage of the competition 12 months ago and on that occasion in Birr it was the Ulster side that emerged as victors advancing to a final appearance against Tipperary on a 1-8 to 0-8 score line.

Waterford down the years have never found it easy against opposition from Ulster on the bigger days in the games calendar and at the break it looked as if Ciaran Curran’s side could well have it all to do again in this game, but a brilliant second half performance in which Waterford struck four goals in a nine minute spell in the final quarter of this game by proved to be the winning and losing of this battle.

Trailing 2-5 to 1-7 at the break two of Waterford’s second half goals were struck by Michelle Ryan one of the longest serving players in the game to the one she scored in the first quarter of the game, while Chloe Fennell and Maria Delahunty also had green flags waved.

The early exchanges in this game suggested that a tight battle was going to be fought.

Aisling Gilsenan opened the scoring with a free inside two minutes but it was quickly cancelled out with an effort from Eimear Fennell.

Donna English and Michelle Ryan swapped scores by the fourth minutes before Cavan struck for the first goal of this game on six minutes when Geraldine Sheridan showed the Waterford defence a clean pair or heels and while Rosie Landers did well to keep wing forwards effort out of the net which she was guarding she was powerless to keep Aishling Sheridan’s rebound from hitting the onion sack, as the Ulster side went 1-2 to 0-2 in front.

Waterford however wasted no time in responding as Maria Delahunty and Michelle Ryan both had white flags waved before the pair combined once more on 10 minutes, Michelle Ryan acting quickest when a Maria Delahunty free fell short and the Ballymacarbry star fisted an effort to the roof of Elaine Walsh’s net putting Waterford 1-4 to 1-2 in front.

Eimear Fennell and Maria Delahunty from frees helped extend Waterford’s lead to four before Sinead Greene was sin binned on 17 minutes after she picked up a yellow card.

The Ulster side however played some of their best football with a numerical disadvantage even if Maria Delahunty from another free was first to score after Greene was sent to the line for 10 minutes.

Aishling Maguire with a brace of scores and one from Aisling Gilsenan from another free made it a two point game with six minutes of the half remaining, but the Cavan ladies would turn around with a point advantage showing on the score board when Gilsenan combined with Shauna Lynch for a second goal firing low into Rosie Landers net.

Waterford however came out for the second half all guns blazing as Maria Delahunty and Róisín Tobin both from play edged Waterford back in front before Maria Delahunty this time from a free gave Waterford a 1-10 to 2-5 advantage six minutes after the restart.

Ciara Finnegan and Chloe Fennell swapped scores before Aisling Maguire and Maria Delahunty did likewise to keep Waterford in front 1-12 to 2-7 mid way through the second half.

Aisling Maguire made it a single point game on 47 minutes before Waterford turned the game very much in their favour.

Michelle Ryan attempt for a point dropped into Eimear Walsh’s net with 11 minutes to go and moments later the same player completed her hat-trick as it began to look like as if it would be Waterford’s day.

Geraldine Sheridan pulled a point back for the Ulster side but Waterford were not finished as Chloe Fennell and Maria Delahunty both landed late goals for Waterford and Michelle Ryan rounded off a memorable afternoon for her hitting the last score of the game for the Déise Ladies.

Waterford: Rosie Landers; Katy Hayes, Caoimhe McGrath, Rebecca Casey; Kate McGrath, Megan Dunford, Róisín Tobin; Karen McGrath, Emma Murray; Kelly Ann Hogan, Michelle Ryan, Katie Murray; Eimear Fennell, Maria Delahunty, Aileen Wall.

Scorers: Michelle Ryan 3-03, Maria Delahunty 1-06 (0-03f), C Fennell 1-1, Eimear Fennell 0-02 (0-01f), Róisín Tobin 0-01.

Cavan: Elaine Walsh; Laura Fitzpatrick, Shauna Lynch, Neasa Byrd; Sinead Greene, Mona Sheridan, Ciara Finnegan; Donna English, Sinead O’Sullivan; Joanne Moore, Aishling Maguire, Aisling Gilsenan; Shanise Fitzsimons, Aishling Sheridan, Geraldine Sheridan.
