The Officers of the Waterford G.A.A.
County Board have acted quickly after the last round of games were played in
the league section of this years County Senior Football Championship were
played to put in place the details of this years quarter Finals.
Six games were played over the past
weekend where no surprize results were thrown up.
County champions look like a side that
is coming good at the right time. They took on Ardmore in Fraher Field on Saturday
evening last. The Seasiders on the night were disappointing and their was never
any doubt as to what the final outcome of the game would be.
John Gorman gave Ballinacourty an
early lead after just thirty seconds finishing the ball to the net after his
side had won it from the throw in. By the time Conor Moloney hit his sides second
major score of the game two minutes from time, the game was all but over. In
fact the reigning champions could have won by more as they were unlucky not to
have won by a lot more as they missed two good goal scoring chances towards the
end of the first half and Gary Hurney with the final kick of the game had a
penalty saved by Sean Barron in the Ardmore goal.
Stradbally also look like a side that
are coming good as the championship enters its business end. The Cove Men took
on An Rinn in Lemybrien on Sunday evening and ran out winners with five points
to spare.
An Rinn held an 0-4 to 0-3 advantage
at the break, but in the second half they were facing a tough task as they were
reduced to fourteen men just before the break when Shane O Cuirrín was sent off
following an off the ball incident. A goal twelve minutes after the restart by
Niall Curran proved to be the crucial score of the game.
The Nire continue to look to be the
best footballing team in this years championship. They are playing a good brand
of football. A Jamie Barron goal in the second minute got the ball rolling and
a second goal from veteran Connie Power three minutes into the second half all
but ensured the win for The Nire.
Clashmore suffered their first loss in
this years championship when they were beaten by Kilrossanty at Bushy Park on
Sunday evening. Three points separated the sides at the end of the game, but
Clashmore will be cursing their luck as they had a chance to get something from
the game at the very end when they were awarded a penalty after Kieran Connery
was fouled but Roger Ryan saw his effort saved by Darren Mulhearne in the
Kilrossanty goal.
Brickeys had their first win of the
year when they beat near neighbours and rivals Dungarvan on Sunday evening.
This game was one that the purest would not have got over excited about. For much
of the game things were rather tight, but goals from Christopher Murphy on
seventeen minutes and Laurence Houlihan eight minutes into the second half
proved decisive.
The best game of the weekend was the
meeting of Saint Saviours and Gaultier at Walsh Park. The Prize for the winners
in this game was going to be survival in the senior grade for the 2013 campaign
so a lively game was always going to be on the cards where both sides would be
going all out for a win.
Gaultier got off to a flying start in
this game and by the twenty-third minute lead 1-5 to 0-2, Bob Doherty finding
the Saint Saviours net. The Ballybeg outfit came more into the game before the
break and only trailed by three points at the change of ends. An Adam Brophy
point early in the second half further reduced the Gaultier lead, but a second
goal for the Barony Men shortly afterwards by J.J. Hutchinson proved crucial.
Gaultier ran out winners with the minimum to spare.
Just over 24 hours after the games
were played and the draws for the quarter finals were confirmed, the County
Board were able to announce venues and times for the games.
Rathgormack will play Clashmore in
Fraher Field on Friday September 21 at 8pm in Fraher Field. The Shandon Road venue
will also stage the other three quarter finals the following day.
Stradbally and Ardmore will meat at
3pm and will be followed later in the evening with the meetings of The Nire and
Kilrossanty at 6pm and then by Ballinacourty and An Rinn at 7-30pm. In all four
games, in the event of a draw, ten minutes extra time will be played.
On the same evening, the relegation
play off game between Saint Saviours and Dungarvan will take place at
Lemybrien. The game will have a 5pm throw in and in the event of this game
ending in a draw the two sides will have to meet all over again.
