Seven
Clubs are through to the County Senior Football Quarter Finals after the fourth
round of games in the league section of the competition played over the past
weekend.
The
Nire, Clashmore and An Rinn had advance to the last eight of the competition
prior to this weekends round of games and thanks to the results thrown up in
Round four they now have been joined by Ardmore, Rathgormack, Ballinacourty and
Stradbally.
Ardmore
were the first of the quartet to qualify for the last eight when they had what
was a surprise win over a fancied Rathgormack side on Friday evening in Fraher
Field.
County
Champions Ballinacourty were next to qualify when they recorded a two point win
over Gaultier at Walsh Park. Gaultier can count themselves unlucky in this game
not to have got something from the game. Barry Mullane hit the net for the
Barony Men eight minutes from the break. Trailing 0-8 to 1-2 at the Break,
Gaultier came out all guns blazing in the second half and within seconds of the
restart had drawn level after JJ Hutchinson found the net. However,
Ballinacourty with Gary Hurney again playing a leading role were able to notch
on the scores in the second half which helped them to a two point victory.
The
second game at Walsh Park on Saturday evening saw The Nire extend their
unbeaten run in this years championship when they recorded a comprehensive
victory over Saint Saviours. The Ballymacarbry based club are having a great
year this year. Along with their sister club Fourmilewater they are through to
the last eight of the championship and if they can keep going the way they are,
there is no reason not to believe that both the Conway and Waterford News and
Star Cup will not find a home in the area over the winter months.
An
Rinn went into their game against Clashmore in Fraher Field minus the services
of their inter county stars Liam Ó Lionáin and Tadhg Ó hUallachain. Even
without such key players, they gave Clashmore a tough battle. An Rinn took an
early lead after Shane Ó Ceallaigh netted an early penalty but Clashmore fought
back and lead by four at the break. Clashmore held a five point lead with
eleven minutes to go but in the time that remained failed to score. An Rinn in
that time hit four points and you could be forgiven for thinking if there was
further time to play that they could have got something from the game.
The
final game of the weekend saw Stradbally take on Brickeys at Fraher Field on
Sunday evening. The Brickeys started brightly and with three minutes on the
clock held a two point advantage. The Cove Men however as expected hit back and
goals from Robert Ahearne, Niall Curran and David Grey eased them to a very
comfortable thirteen point victory.
The
game between Dungarvan and Kilrossanty was twice called off over the weekend
due to bereavements within the Dungarvan Club. The game is now fixed to take
place this Wednesday evening in Fraher Field and the game has an 8pm thrown in.
Kilrossanty
look best placed to take the eight quarter final place while the battle for
relegation is set to lie between the looser of the games between Gaultier and
Saint Saviours as well as the game between Dungarvan and the Brickeys which
will be played this coming weekend.
