The
past number of years has seen a number of proposals made relating to how the
different championships should be run in the county.
Many
people have suggested just as a number of the underage championships have gone
in recent years, all of the adult championships should go down the same road
and that divisional boards should be scrapped and confined to the pages of
history.
Not
surprisingly, past and present officers of the divisional boards are totally
against such a move (in public anyway) basing their arguments on the fact that
divisional boards have served the county well in the past and could do so in
the future. Mention by the officers of the great joy it is for a club to play
and win in a divisional final and then go on to play in a county final a few
weeks later is also common place.
Some
years back, a proposal was made at the County G.A.A. Convention to introduce an
all county intermediate ‘Premier’ hurling championships where the best teams in
the intermediate grade would play each other, giving clubs between possibly
seven and ten games in the championship before the knockout stages would come
into play.
The
idea was good one, but did it get a fair hearing? In recent years Waterford’s
record in the Munster Club Intermediate Championship is far from satisfactory.
Since the introduction of the club championships at a provincial level,
Waterford have gone out at the first hurdle more times that they have won a
game in the championship.
Not
surprisingly, when it went to a vote on the evening, the proposal was defeated.
Whether
the various championships in Waterford will go all county in the coming years
is hard to know. If the divisional boards have their way, hell will freeze over
first.
However,
for the good of football and hurling in the county, someone will have to make a
brave call sooner rather than later and decide that divisional boards have had
their day. A reasonable time span (not less than five years) has to be given
where all competitions are played on an all county basis and if after that
time, clubs can vote to revert back to divisional style championships.
Listed
below are all non underage Championships in Waterford as of this morning.
Looking
at them you can’t but notice how lopsided some of our competitions are. Let’s
give credit to the Eastern Board for the way they run the Junior Hurling
(Senior) attached competition. They have given each club a minimum of ten
games. Up west, the western board have given players playing in the same grade
a minimum of four games. For a club in the west who has a player who has
potential, but who is not quiet good enough to play in the senior grade, will
four CHAMPIONSHIP games in the year
help him develop his game?
In
football, in the east of the county, just three clubs – through no fault of the
board are competing in the Junior Football (Senior) Attached football attached
competition. Players competing in this grade get a minimum of four CHAMPIONSHIP games this year. Again, if
one of these clubs has a player with potential but is not quiet ready to play
in the senior ranks, is this enough games to help him develop his game. Would
he be better off competing in an all county competition where he could get a
minimum of eight games?
We
have seen how moving to all county competitions at Under 14, 16 and Minor has
helped the county especially in hurling and there is no reason why it cant
happen at adult level. Unless we try something out, how will we ever know, if
they will work or not.
