Weekly Digest 15-1-2014.

Club of the Year

Congratulations to Lismore on recently being announced as the Waterford Camogie Club of the year. The club’s Chairperson Mary Russell was recently presented with the winners trophy by former county board chairperson Trish McCarthy.

Meanwhile Lismore learned recently that their All-Ireland Intermediate Club semi final against Leitriona/Fontenoys will take place on Sunday February 2 at 2pm in Kinnegad, Co Westmeath.

Dr Harty Cup

There was disappointment for Dungarvan CBS this week when their Dr Harty Cup Quarter Final against Hamilton High School from Bandon was called off on Tuesday evening due to the fact that the Castlemartyr field was unplayable.

It is understood that the game will be re-fixed later this week or over the weekend and will be played someday next week.

Both sides should know their opponents in the semi final this Friday afternoon as they play the winners of ArdScoil Ris and Our Lady’s Templemore. The two meet on Friday afternoon at 1-30pm in Nenagh.

Meanwhile the sides contesting the other semi final are known. In today’s semi finals St Francis College from Rochestown in Cork had a 1-13 to 0-11 victory over Thurles CBS who were fancied to have a good stab at winning provincial and national honours at this age level this year. The victory for the Cork side will now get many of the remaining sides sit up and take notice of the danger that the Rebel students cause others.

In the semi finals they will play Doon CBS who beat Charleville CBS 2-13 to 1-13 at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick.

Meanwhile in the Munster Senior ‘C’ hurling semi final, there was no joy for St Augustine’s from Abbeyside as they were beaten Salesian College from Pallaskenry on a 1-14 to 0-14 score line in Cashel.

Waterford Crystal Cup

Waterford’s interest in this year’s Waterford Crystal Cup may have ended after a 1-11 to 0-10 defeat to University of Limerick at wind and rain lashed Carriganore on Sunday afternoon last, but there will be some action within the county this Sunday in the competition as Waterford Institute of Technology take on University of Limerick at Carriganore.

The Waterford side will be understrength in this competition as a number of their players who would be expected to feature in their Fitzgibbon Cup campaign have played with Waterford in the competition which could make the Limerick side favourites to advance to the next phase of the competition.

AGM’s

Two Ladies Football Clubs are set to hold their AGM’s this coming weekend.

The Na Déise Club are set to hold their meeting on Sunday evening in the Modeligo Community Centre at 7pm and on Friday evening the Shamrocks Club hold their meeting at the Knockanre-Glendine-Kilwatermoy Community Hall at 8pm.

Both Clubs have appealed to those with an interest in Ladies Football in their catchment area to attend the meetings.

Jackson’s Reappointed

Former Waterford Senior Football Manager John Jackson Kiley was re-elected as manager of the Kilrossanty Senior Football team for a third year recently.

Under John Kiely, the Comeragh men have done well over the past two season’s reaching the quarter finals twice, loosing both games in thrillers by a small margin to The Nire.

John Kiely has put together a strong outfit together in recent years and will be one of the sides outside of the ‘Big Three’ most likely to challenge for the Conway Cup in 2014.

Meanwhile another former Waterford manager has found a new job.

Former Senior Hurling Manager Michael Ryan was recently confirmed as the manager of the Saint Mary’s Club in Clonmel. He is a number of Waterford men that has taken over new positions this year.

The big news on the managerial front in Waterford this week was the news that former Tipperary hurler and Waterford selector Colm Bonner had resigned as manager of the Ballygunner Club.

Bonner was only named as manager of the Gunner’s at their AGM before Christmas and was going to be working alongside former manager Andy Moloney who was going to be a selector. However in-house wrangling meant that Moloney resigned and was soon followed by Colm Bonner.
