It's another big weekend for Camogie in Waterford as
Lismore contest the Munster Intermediate Club Championship Final against Clare
champions Newmarket-on-Fergus at the Latin Cullen grounds in Co. Tipperary. The
game has a 2-45pm throw in.
Both sides go into this weekend’s game with a recent good
run of results behind them.
In the Clare County Final played recently,
Newmarket-on-Fergus had a 1-11 to 0-9 victory over Clooney-Quin on a 1-11 to
0-9 score line.
In the first half of that game, the winners totally
dominated the opening half and retired at the interval holding a 0-9 to 0-2
advantage.
In the second half, the girls from Clooney-Quin came more
and more into the game and restricted the winners to hitting 1-2 over thirty
minutes.
Áine O’Brien finished top scorer for the Banner Ladies
that day, with 0-8. Six of which came from frees and one from a forty-five.
Full forward Jenny Kelly was the Newmarket-on-Fergus goal
scorer on the day and finished the game with 1-1 to her name while Niki Kaiser
hit a brace of points.
In the Munster semi final played recently at
Newmarket-on-Fergus, the home side proved to strong for Tipperary champions
Éire Óg Annacarty winning on a 1-15 to 0-3 score line.
Áine O’Brien finished as top scorer once more for the
Clare Champions in this game hitting 0-9 over the hour.
Her first score of the game came on two minutes when she
put over a ’45. Niki Kaiser added a second score for the Clare champions on
eight minutes and as the first quarter drew to its conclusion, Áine O’Brien hit
her second of the game.
Carol Kaiser hit a goal for the Clare Champions on
sixteen minutes but not before Sarah O’Neill in the Annacarty goals had pulled
off a good save from Ann Marie Hayes.
A point from Jenny Kelly soon afterwards extended the
Clare sides lead to seven before Ena Meagher pulled a point back for the
Tipperary side.
Aine O’Brien cancelled out the Tipperary sides score with
a point before Joanne Walsh and 18th minute sub for Aislinn Keogh
pointed, after which Siobhan O’Neill and Jenny Kelly swapped scores which gave the
Clare side a 1-7 to 0-2 lead at the break.
The Clare side continued to dominate in the second half.
Áine O’Brien hit over three points at the start of the second half before
Siobhan O’Neill pointed once more for the Tipperary side, their last of the
game.
The Clare side continued to dominate in the remainder of
the game. Deidre Cassidy and Jenny Kelly pointed one each and Áine O’Brien hit
three to give the Clare side a comfortable win.
The Clare champions will be expected to line out in a
similar fashion to their last two games, meaning that Erica Minougue will start
between the posts with Jane O’Leary, Laura McMahon and Aislinn Keogh expected
to start in front of her. The half back line ons expected to be Aimee
McInerney, Roisin McMahon and Aoife Griffin.
Áine O’Brien is expected to be a handful in the middle of
the field and is expected to be partnered by Ruth Kaiser.
Deirdre Cassidy, Carol O’Leary and Carol Kaiser is
expected for form the half forward line with Ann Marie Hayes, Jenny Kelly and
Nicki Kaiser in the inside forward line.
Lismore also come into this weekend’s Munster Final in
fine form having recorded a very comfortable win over Gall Tír in the county
semi final and then had a hard fought win over Saint Anne’s in the county
final.
In the Munster Semi Final against Carrigaline recently,
they again had to work hard to secure their passage to this weekend’s Munster Final.
In a very tight first half, it was Carrigaline that just
about shaded it.
The home side opened the scoring with a Rachel O’Shea
free before Aoife Hannon banged over a brace to give Lismore a 0-2 to 0-1 lead
after eleven minuets.
Lismore’s Ruth Geoghegan extended her sides lead to two
but the Cork side hit back with 1-1 to take a two point lead.
Aoife Hannon pulled a point back for Lismore before
Rachel O’Shea hit a brace but points from Aoife Hannon and Ruth Geoghegan
before the break ensured that Lismore ended the first half just one point down,
1-4 to 0-6.
Aoife Hannon levelled matters early in the second half,
but a brace from O’Shea in the home sides colours soon had her side 1-6 to 0-7
in front.
Lismore lost their top tallies person Aoife Hannon ten
minutes into the second half, but it did not have too much of an effect on the
team as Lismore proved to be the better of the sides.
A long range Shona Curran free dropped in front in the
home sides goalmouth and Caithriona McGlone was quickest to react to slam the
ball to the net.
Further points from Shona Curran and Caithriona McGlone extended
Lismore’s advantage and secured their place in this weekend’s Munster Final.
Lismore have done a little chopping and changing to their
team in recent games, but basically stick to the same fifteen.
Aisling O’Brien is a certainty to start in goal, while in
front of her Sarah Coughlan, Shauna Prendergast and Sandra Prendergast could
well start in the full back line.
Shauna Kiernan is set to start in the centre back line,
and she could well be partnered by Marie Russell and Sarah Geoghegan.
In the middle of the field, team captain Shona Curran is
likely to be partnered by Aoife Houlihan but if Marie Russell was to move out
there, it would not be a major surprise.
Nicola Morrissey, Ruth Geoghegan and Sinead Walsh could
form a dangerous half forward line with Aoife Hannon, Caithriona McGlone and
Johanna Houlihan expected to fill the number thirteen to fifteen shirts.
Just as in hurling, Camogie is no longer a one to fifteen
game and what comes off the bench could be vitally important.
Jennifer Kingston, Shauna Fennessy, Sarah Russell, Sinead
Bennett, Laura Buckley, have all come off the bench in recent games and have
proved their worth to the team and will be looking to win a place in the team
for the start for this weekend’s game while Rachel Knowles, Ber O’Keeffe, Niamh
Molumphy and Grainne Kenneally could also feature.
This will be the third meeting of the two sides in recent
years. In 2010 and again in 2011, it was Lismore that came out on top. Will
they make it third time lucky in 2013. Fingers Crossed.
