Carlow and Waterford meet in N.F.L. South East Derby.

Four games are down for decision in the final round of games in the fourth division of this year’s National Football league on Sunday afternoon.

Unfortunately, half of these games are dead rubbers as there is nothing but pride to play for, and from a Waterford perspective the game with Carlow in Dr Cullen Park happens to be one of them.

Waterford began this years league in fine fashion with wins over Clare and Tipperary and although they lost to Limerick in third series of games and another defeat against London followed, Waterford were still in contention for one of the promotion places as results in other games in the third and fourth series of games went in Waterford’s favour.

However subsequent defeats to Leitrim and then Offaly meant that Waterford’s interest in this year’s league was over for another year.

Carlow like Waterford went into this years leagues with high expectations of securing one of the two promotion places in the league.

They opened with a deserved narrow win over Tipperary at Thurles but since then, their only win came against London. However, like Waterford they have failed to get more than four points up to this stage of the competition meaning that their interest in the league is over with a few weeks.

With Carlow playing Westmeath in the championship on May 19 and Waterford playing the winners of the game between Kerry and Tipperary on June 1, both sides will be going all out for a win in this game which they hope would be a confidence booster going into what will be tough championship battles for both sides.

Both sides will go back to their clubs after this week. In Carlow, the County Senior Football League gets underway after this game, while in the Déise County two rounds of the league have already been played while the championship gets underway next weekend.

No teams appear to be made available at the time of penning this piece, but it is envisaged that both Niall Carew and Anthony Rainbow will field relatively strong teams for this game, but could well decide to give some fringe players as well as some panellists who may not have seen much action in the league to date some game time in this game.
