The quarter final pairings in this years Fitzgibbon Cup
have been confirmed after the last round of games in the league section of the
competition.
UCC have topped group one after they recorded a 1-13 to
0-14 win over NUIG at the Mardyke.
The eventual winners lead at the break 1-7 to 0-7, the
games only goal coming from Waterford’s Brian O’Sullivan.
The Rebel students in the opening stages of the second
extended their lead as Seamus Harnedy and Brian Murphy found the range.
The Galway side through Niall Burke railed in the home
side and with four minutes to play the sides were all square (1-11 to 0-14).
The Galway side
could have taken the lead when Niall Burke from half way pulled wide of
the target. Points from Harnedy and Darragh Fives in the closing stages of the
game secured a win for the home side.
Mary Immaculate College from Limerick took the second
place in group one after they bear GMIT 2-14 to 1-8 at Carnmore.
GMIT began the game brightly as Aidan Lynch hit a goal on
eight minutes. However the Limerick side wasted no time in responding as they
hit 1-5 without reply, the goal coming just short of the quarter of an hour
mark from Luke O’Farrell.
The Limerick side in the opening half continued to
dominate and by the break lead 1-8 to 1-2.
The third quarter of the fame proved to be the closest
portion of the game as both sides added two points each to their half time
tally, but the winners in the final quarter took over control of proceedings
and a William Hickey goal three minutes from time helped them to a 2-14 to 1-8
victory.
WIT have won group two after they recorded a comprehensive
3-15 to 2-8 victory over CIT at the WIT Campus at Carriganore.
The Déise Students opened as well as anybody could have
dreamt. At the break they lead 2-10 to 0-4, the goals coming from Jake Dillon
and Eoin Murphy in the first quarter of the game.
Michael O’Sullivan and David Drake in the latter stages
of the game hit consolation goals for CIT but a second WIT goal from Jake
Dillon in the second half meant that WIT were going to come out of the group as
group winners.
LIT booked their place in the last eight of the
competition with a comprehensive 3-23 to 0-10 victory over DCU at the LIT
Campus.
Tipperary’s Seamus Callanan proved to be his side’s key
man on the day, serving up a magnificent performance with 1-9 behind his name
at the end of the game.
The Drom and Inch man hit 1-3 of this tally in the first
half, the goal coming from a 20 metre free.
The winners will have been extremely happy after the game
that they had eleven different scorers in this game, but will be concerned that
they hit twelve wide’s on the day, a tally on another day could well have
proven costly.
A Sean Collins goal early in the second half killed off
any chance the Dublin students had and they finished a good day in the office
when Jamie Fitzgibbon added a third goal for Davy Fitzgerald’s charges.
Clare’s Niall Arthur hit 1-10 for St Patrick’s Mater Dei
at Clontaft but it was not good enough to help his side reach the latter stages
of this years competition, as his side finished second best to DIT on a 1-16 to
1-12 scoreline.
The winners hit the first major score of the game on
eight minutes when Mike Moloney planted a 20 metre free in the St Pat’s net.
However with Arthur to the fore St Pats came back, but DIT with points from David
Tracy, Mike Moloney and Niall Quinn helped them into a three point lead coming
up to the break.
A goal however from Niall Arthur three minutes into
stoppage time ensured that the sides would end half tied at 1-5 a piece.
DIT took the lead on 37 minutes through Stephen O’Connor
and never relinquished the lead.
The quarter finals take place next week. UCC take on city
rivals CIT at the Mardyke, WIT have home advantage over Davy Fitzgerald’s LIT
side, UCD take on University of Limerick and DIT take on Mary Immaculate College.
The first named team in all cases have home advantage.
Times and dates for the games are expected to be announced later in the week.
