Five Waterford clubs went into Munster
Championship action this past weekend, all hoping to advance to the next phase
of the competitions in which they were competing, but sadly, the end result in
all five games saw none of the five advance.
Saint Anne’s were the first team in action.
They took on Kilmaley from Clare in the Munster Intermediate Camogie Munster
Final at Lattin Cullen’s grounds on Saturday afternoon, but had to settle for
second best against what was a very good County Clare outfit, going under on a
4-10 to 0-3 scoreline.
Four teams were in action on Sunday. First
up were An Rinn who travelled to Templederry in North Tipperary where they
played another Clare side – Truagh Clonlara in the Munster Junior Camogie Championship Final. This proved to be a very close
game and in the end just two points separated the sides, the Banner outfit
winning on a 2-6 to 1-7 scoreline.
County Intermediate Football Champions
Ballinameela took on Limerick champions Pallasgreen at Cappoquin on Sunday
afternoon. Despite a less than satisfactory start in which they conceded two
goals in the first three minutes of the game, Ballinameela recovered well and
went in at the break trailing by three points.
A brilliant Brian Phelan goal at the start
of the second half drew the sides even closer and with just two minutes to go,
the sides were all square and it looked as if extra time was going to be needed
to see who will advance to next weekend’s semi final. However in the last
minute of normal time, the Limerick champions kicked a late point through Alan
Wallace to secure their passage to next weekends semi final.
It was a busy weekend for those in the Ring
area as their Intermediate hurlers were also in provincial action. They travelled
to Dolla in North Tipperary to play Silvermines in the semi final stages of the
provincial competition.
An Rinn got off to a flying start and by the
break they had a three point advantage. The Tipperary champions added three
points at the start of the second half to level matters and for much of the
second period it was very much tit-for-tat, but in the end the home side were
able to hold out for a two points victory on a 0-13 to 0-11 scoreline.
Waterford’s final team in action this
weekend was the Ballymacarbry Ladies Football team who were playing the Munster
Senior ‘B’ Final against Clare side Banner Ladies Football Club from Ennis.
This proved to be a very high scoring game. At
the break the Clare outfit held a 3-7 to 2-5 advantage and while the
Ballymacarbry won the second half, in the end they had to settle for second
best going under on a 4-11 to 4-8 scoreline.
This coming weekend De La Salle will be
Waterford’s sole representatives involved in provincial championships, as they
take on Clare champions Newmarket-on-Fergus at Sixmilebridge. In the comings
weeks, The Nire or Stradbally will take on Castlehaven from Cork in the Senior
Football Championship and Butlerstown and Kilmacthomas will also be in action,
both at Waterford venues.
