Maurice and Dan to the fore for Lismore.

In the game of the first round games in this years JJ Kavanagh & Sons County Senior Hurling Championship played at Fraher Field on Sunday evening, Lismore with the Shanahan brothers to the fore had a three point win over Dungarvan in what was a very entertaining game where the outcome was in doubt right to the finish. Maurice finished the game with 1-12 to his name while older brother Dan chipped in with an impressive four points. With five minutes of the hour to play, Lismore held a six point advantage against a side playing with fourteen men. A minute from the hour mark Gavin Crotty to score from a tight angle to cut the lead to three and two further points from Cathal Curran made things difficult. However, a goal mid way through five minutes of additional time at the end of the hour from Maurice Shanahan ensured that victory was going to be Lismore’s.

Passage 1-13 Ballyduff Upper 0-15

Eoin Kelly gave County Senior Hurling manager something to think about ahead of Waterford’s clash with Clare on June 17 by scoring a good goal early in his sides clash with Ballyduff Upper at Fraher Field on Friday evening. The games only goal came on four minutes when Kelly reacted fasted to an Owen Connors hand pass deflected from its intended target and he shot past Adrian Power with a magnificent ground stroke. The highlight of the game was a superb point scored by Kelly midway through the second half when he raced onto a ball turned and shot over the head of Adrian Power in one movement.

Ballygunner 0-17 Abbeyside 0-12
Stephen Power put in a magnificent performance on free taking duties for Ballygunner as they beat Abbeyside with five points to spare at Fraher Field on Saturday evening last. The opening 20 minutes of this game proved to be very tight with little separating the two sides. Patrick Hurney was very unlucky not to have hit a goal for Abbeyside on 23 minutes, Ballygunner’s full back Stephen O’Keeffe getting a crucial touch on the ball just as Hurney was about to attempt an overhead strike. Trailing 0-10 to 0-7 at the break, Abbeyside were unlucky not to have levelled matters at the start of the second half when they were awarded a penalty but Richie Foley saw his effort well saved by Gunners goal keeper Stephen O’Keeffe who was been watched by Waterford manager Michael Ryan. The champions continued to prove to be the better team in the second half and ran out deserved winners.

Tallow 2-16 Dunhill 1-13
Last years beaten finalists, Tallow got this years championship off to a winning start at Fraher Field on Sunday Evening where they accounted for last years Intermediate champions Dunhill. Goals from Thomas Ryan and Evan Sheehan inside two minutes of each other mid way though the second quarter looked to have given the Bride-siders a huge advantage, but a goal from Shane Casey before the break meant that Tallow would have to continue to work hard. It was only in the final quarter of the game, thanks in no small part to some unerring free taking from Robert O’Sullivan that Tallow were able to pull away and ensure victory was going to he theirs.
