All-Ireland Intermediate Camogie and Division
Two league winners Waterford will have their first competitive game of the New Year
on February 28 when they take on Kilkenny at a Kilkenny venue the top tier of
the National League.
For Sean Flemings charges the league is going
to see his side rack up the miles as of the four games the side will play,
three of them are away, one of which is a very long trip to Ulster to play
Derry.
Waterford’s only home game in the league will
see them play fellow Munster side Limerick who have performed well at this
grade since they made the move from Division two in the league and from
Intermediate to senior in the championship, something that will give Waterford
plenty of confidence for the year ahead as unlike other years it is envisaged
that the side will start the year with a very strong panel following Lismore’s
recent exit from the Club Championship following defeat to Cahir in the Munster
Final.
After playing Limerick on March 13, it’s
another Munster Derby for Waterford the following week as they make the trip to
Cork to play the All-Ireland senior champions on their own patch.
Waterford will round off their league
campaign with the long trip north to play Derry on March 27.
The top two teams in group B will play the
top two teams in group A which consists of Tipperary, Galway, Offaly, Wexford,
Dublin and Clare in the semi finals which are pencilled in for April 17 with
the final set to be played on May 1.
In the championship Waterford will have their
first game on June 18 when they take on Cork at a Waterford venue.
Sean Fleming’s side will travel to Limerick a
week later before welcoming Wexford to the Déise County for a South East Derby
on July 2 and a week later Waterford have another home game as Clare will be
the visitors.
Waterford will round off the league section
of the competition with an away game on July 16.
With three points on offer for a win in nest
years championship, every win is going to be vital.
Three sides will advance to the knockout
stages of the championship in 2016 with the top team in each group receiving a
bye into the semi finals where they will play the winners of the cross over
quarter final games involving the second and third placed teams in the two
groups.
The quarter finals of the championship are pencilled
in for the last weekend of July with the semi finals two weeks later and the
final fixed for Croke Park on September 11 and any replay needed from
All-Ireland Final Day going ahead on October 2.
In the Minor Championship Waterford will play
in the ‘A’ Competition for the second year in a row after their ‘B’ All-Ireland
win over Derry in 2014. In 2015 Waterford moved up a grade despite not winning
the 2013 All-Ireland ‘B’ Championship. With so many of the panel from 2015
available again in 2016 the year playing in the higher grade is something that
will stand to the players in 2016.
Waterford will begin their campaign with a
home game against Galway on February 21. A week later Waterford will have a bye
and so play their second game on March 12 when they travel to play Cork.
Waterford’s second home game will be on March
26 when Wexford will be the visitors and the Déise ladies last game in the
league section of the competition is an away game against Limerick on April 3.
The top two teams in the group will advance
to the semi finals which are fixed for April 16 with the final scheduled for a
week later.
With some excellent work going on in the
development of Camogie in Waterford in recent years its no surprise to see
Waterford involved in the ‘A’ grade of competition in the Under 16
Championship.
Waterford are drawn in Group A along with
Kilkenny, Limerick, Clare and Dublin, while Cork, Galway, Tipperary, Wexford
and Offaly battle it out in Group B.
Waterford’s first game is fixed for July 3
against Clare at an away venue.
Waterford’s next game takes place five days
later as Kilkenny will travel to a Waterford venue.
On July 17 Waterford have another home game,
this time against Dublin before they round off the league section of the
competition against Limerick on July 13.
Should play offs be needed to decide final
placings in the groups they will take place on August 7, but should there be no
need for play offs the semi finals will go ahead on that date.
Should the semi finals not go ahead on August
7 they will happen the following weekend, but should there be need for play
offs the All-Ireland Final will go ahead on the weekend of August 13 and 14.
From June 17 to 19 Féile na nGael will be
staged in Waterford and Tipperary. Over the weekend some of the biggest Camogie
Clubs in the country will be visiting the area and give the game a boost nearly
two decades on (1996 and 1997) from when Feile last came to the Déise County.
