Two out of two for Dungarvan Colleges

All teams taking part in this year’s Dr Harty Cup have played in the competition after today’s round of games.

For a number of reasons, a great deal of games in the first series of games was postponed two weeks ago, but all nine games in the four groups went ahead today.

It was a day when it rained goals. In total twenty five goals were registered with the greatest amount coming in the game between De La Salle and the Kerry Colleges where seven were struck, six of which went to the Waterford City side.

In group ‘A’, Saint Colman’s are top of the group after playing their second game. They followed a first round victory over the Kerry Colleges with a draw against Clonmel C.B.S., the game finishing at thirteen points a piece. De La Salle were the biggest winners of the day hitting 6-21 against the Kerry Colleges and conceding just 1-6. The third game in group one saw Ard Scoil Rís win the all Limerick battle, beating Castletroy College 2-14 to 0-8.

The West Limerick Colleges are top of group ‘B’. They fought out a 1-18 a piece draw with Our Lady’s from Templemore. Stephen Bennett hit 1-10 for Blackwater Community School in their 3-20 to 0-8 victory over Charleville CBS at Fermoy. Abbey CBS did not have a game to play in this round of games.

In group ‘C’, Midleton CBS are top of the pile after they won the all Cork battle against Coláiste Chriost Rí 1-18 to 0-9 and in the second game played in this group Thurles CBS came out on top in the all Tipperary battle, overcoming the challenge of Nenagh CBS on a 1-16 to 0-9 scoreline.

Dungarvan Colleges (formally Colaiste na nDeise) sit top of the pile in group ‘D’ after they had ten points to spare over Saint Caimin’s at Tipperary. The Combined St Augustine’s and Dungarvan C.B.S came out on top on a 3-12 to 0-11 scoreline. In the second game played in this group it was Doon CBS who won last years Munster ‘B’ Colleges Championship that won out against Gael Colaiste Mhuire from Cork on a 2-16 to 3-9 scoreline.

Games in round three takes place in two weeks times and some intriguing battles lie in store.

In group ‘A’, Saint Colman’s and De La Salle clash in what will be the game of the round in this group. Kerry Colleges will be hoping for their first win this year when they take on Ard Scoil Rís and Castletroy College take on Clonmel CBS.

In Group ‘B’ Blackwater Community School from Lismore take on Abbey Community School from Tipperary and Our Lady’s from Templemore take on Charleville CBS.

Midleton CBS and Thurles CBS clash in what could well be the game of the round in group ‘C’ and Nenagh CBS will be hoping for better luck when they take on Hamilton High School from Brandon.

Game of the round in Group ‘D’ would appear to be the clash between Dungarvan Colleges and Saint Flannan’s. The two side clashed at the quarter final stages of the 2011-12 competition earlier this year and it was the West Waterford Colleges side that emerged victors but they will be minus many of the panel on that day when the sides meet again. The final game in this group will see Doon CBS take on Saint Caimin’s from Shannon.

Trisha is hoping to be the fifth Na Déise player to collect a medal in Croke Park.

When Waterford run onto Croke Park on Sunday afternoon next in the All-Ireland Intermediate Ladies Football Final against Armagh running onto the field with them, most likely as a sub will be Na Déise Ladies Football Club Member Trisha Kiely.

20 year old Trisha is no stranger to playing football. She has been doing so since she was a very young age and says that her father Declan who played for many years with the Sliabh gCua/Saint Mary’s Club had her kicking a football in the garden from almost the day she was born.

Trisha began playing organised football from a young age. In late spring/early summer of 1998, as a senior infants pupil at Saint Mary’s Touraneena National School, each day when the older girls including her two older sisters Deirdra and Sinead were training for a school league final, Trisha would hang around with them, watching them play football and often filled in when someone was missing to make up numbers for a game.

All of the older players in the group were in agreement in the days leading up to the final that Trisha should be added to the group and would be given a jersey on the day of the final against Ballyduff Upper.

On the day of the final the Touraneena girls were beaten by a better Ballyduff side, and after the game the players were naturally disappointed. They knew that they had put in a terrific effort in preparing but on the day their best was not to prove enough.

After the game, naturally there was some tears, but these quickly dried up when the Cumann na mBunscol officials in the presentation area of the Stand in Fraher Field called the team up, Trisha lead them up the steps and was the first to get a medal, and has no hesitation in telling anyone that she was only in Senior Infants while standing beside a microphone that was switched on.

Like all the rest of the panel, Trisha is appealing for people not just from the Touraneena and Modeligo areas where she plays her football, but right across the county to get to Croke Park on Sunday.

“I think it's very important for as many people to go to Croke Park on Sunday as possible” Trisha says. “I would hope that plenty of locals will drive up for the occasion. So far i know that there is a bus going from my secondary school, Ard Scoil Na nDeise, members from my club team Na Déise, family and friends”. Trisha like the rest of her team colleagues travelling to Dublin says that “the whole County should be out to cheer us on as we are the only Waterford Team to reach an All Ireland this year”.

Trisha joined the panel in January of this year. She learned of her inclusion in the panel through Johnny Landers, who told her that the manager Pat O’Brien wanted to see her in training. Since then she has not looked back, taking in all that has been told to her by the more senior members of the panel.

On her first night with the panel at the Community Centre in Ballymacarbry, she literally had to be pushed in the doors of the building. However once she got in and spotted another local girl Aoife Landers from Knockboy, as well as Shannon Dunford she was grand. She did not know many of the other players but quickly got to know them. She says the craic within the panel is brilliant and rates duel star Shona Curran as the “class clown”. (She’s some person if she beats Trisha T.K.)
Ahead of Sunday’s final, Trisha has been taking in all what the senior players are telling the younger players about Croke Park and its surrounds. The Wall sister’s from Ballymacarbry, Trisha says has been of particular help to her in letting her know what to expect when she runs onto the field. On Sunday Trisha follows in the footsteps of Olivia Condon, Honor Lonergan, Angie Walsh and Marion Troy as Na nDéise players to run onto Croke Park on All-Ireland Final day.

She knows that the players that have been part of Waterford teams to play there in the past have encouraged others to take up the game of Ladies Football and she is hoping that her involvement will get other young girls as well as the more mature and those that might not have played football for some while to get involved in the game.

She feels with the right work rate and dedication that others from the area can follow her and those that have gone before her and get to be part of a Waterford team to play in Croke Park on All-Ireland Final Day in the future.

“We (Na nDéise) already have a few girls playing underage football for the County” says Trisha and “hopefully they will keep up the good work and they might get to play in Croke Park” in the future.

Trisha is grateful to be part of the Waterford panel this year and has got to play in a number of league and challenge games. Naturally, she is disappointed to not to have got to play more games this year but openly admits that she could have put in a lot more of an effort this year, and maybe if she had pushed herself more she might have played more than she did. But one thing Trisha always had is determination and she will be going all out next year to show why she should be given more of a run in the side.

Trisha has played for the county right up the different levels from under 14 and to date she has won a Minor ‘B’ Shield All-Ireland Medal in recent years and a Munster Intermediate medal this year.

An All-Ireland medal would be something that Trisha has always dreamt about winning, but know that to do so will be no easy task as Armagh will provide stiff opposition this Sunday as they have drawn and beaten Waterford in their two previous meetings this year.

Sunday’s All-Ireland Final in Croke Park has a 2pm throw in and will be preceded by the Junior Final between Antrim and Louth and followed by the senior game between Cork and Kerry.

For those who cannot get to the game, it will be shown live on TG4 and WLR.fm will have Kieran O’Connor and Michael Ryan in situ to tell listeners what is happening from start to finish

A big week on the colleges front lies ahead.

It’s going to be a busy few days for Waterford College sides competing in the Munster Colleges G.A.A. Championships as well as for colleges outside of the county that will most likely include some players who are playing for clubs within the county.

The Harty Cup continues on Wednesday with nine games down to be played. Three Waterford sides will be amongst those playing, two of whom will be playing in the competition for the first time this year. The holders Colaiste na nDéise are the only side to have played in this years competition to date, recording a 3-13 to 1-13 win over Doon CBS last Wednesday in Golden.

In Group A, De La Salle College make the long trip to Mallow to take on the Kerry Colleges for a 1-30pm throw in while at the same time in Pairc na Gael in Limerick there is an all Limerick clash when Ardscoil Rís and Castletroy meet and at Mitchelstown Clonmel CBS and Saint Colman’s College from Fermoy do battle.

In Group B, Blackwater Community School in Lismore make the short journey to Fermoy where they will play Charleville C.B.S. at 1-30pm and half an hour earlier at Claughan, Our Lady’s from Templemore take on the West Limerick Colleges.

Two games are down for decision in Group C. At Templemore there is an all Tipperary battle when Thurles CBS and Nenagh CBS do battle at 1-30pm and at the same time in Cobh there is an all Cork battle when Midleton CBS and Colaiste Chriost Rí do battle.

Colaiste na nDéise make the journey to Tipperary Town to play Saint Caimin’s from Shannon for a 1-30 start. The West Waterford Colleges side will have happy memories of playing here, as there most recent visit saw them beat a fancied Saint Flannan’s side in the quarter final stages of last years competition, and in Ballygiblin outside Mitchelstown, Gael Coláiste Mhuire from Cork City take on Doon CBS again at 1-30pm.

All Systems go as 3 County Finals are ready to be played.

The opposition for three of this years County Hurling finals were confirmed in the Déise County over the past weekend.

In Senior, this years competition will see favourites De La Salle take on what to many is the surprize package of the championship – the 2009 county intermediate champions Dungarvan.

In intermediate hurling Portlaw and An Rinn will be the teams that have won the right to contest this years final, while in Junior Butlerstown who were in last years county final and were involved in three games with Ballinameela before the western club won out are once more back in the final and this year their opponents will be Ballinameela’s greatest and most deadly rivals – The Geraldines.

De La Salle won their place in the final on Saturday evening when they accounted for Mount Sion at Walsh Park.

The first half proved to be a very even affair with the Monastery Men holding a two point advantage at the break.

De La Salle opened the scoring on six minutes when the impressive Paudi Nevin pointed after some good first time hurling.

Mount Sion wasted no time in pulling De La Salle back with Stephen Roche scoring which was followed with Dean Twomey and Martin O’Neill trading points to leave the sides locked at two points a piece at the end of the first quarter.

Mount Sion at the start of the second quarter hit a purple patch. Points from Martin O’Neill and Austin Gleeson gave them a two point advantage. Points from Dean Twomey and Jake Dillon followed which had the sides all square for the third time with the clock ticking down in the first half.

Points from Martin O’Neill and Dean Twomey followed to keep the sides all square and it looked as if De La Salle were going to take control of the game when Jake Dillon pointed a free, but it was the Monastery men that retired in front after they gained possession after Stephen Daniels failed to clear the ball out of defence and when Michael Gaffney went close enough to goal he gave Stephen Brenner in the De La Salle goal no chance of keeping his shot out of the net.

De La Salle wasted no time in the second half in bringing the sides back level. Points from Bryan Phelan and Jake Dillon were quickly registered and went the latter put over a free after Martin O’Neill pointed for Mount Sion, the two time County and Provincial winners were level with their opponents for the sixth time in the game.

Points from Kevin Moran, a controversial effort from Shane McNulty and Jake Dillon looked to be setting De La Salle on their way at the end of the third quarter as they lead 0-12 to 1-6, but Ken McGrath pointed and then a Martin O’Neill free dropped short and Anthony Kirwan reacted quickest to plant the ball in the De La Salle net for the second time in the game, it was beginning to look like if Mount Sion could be about to dump one of the favourites out of the championship for the second successive round of games.

Bryan Phelan pulled the sides back level when he put over a free and when Kevin Moran set up John Mullane it gave De La Salle a lead that they never lost.

Eddie Barrett pointed for De La Salle six minutes from the end of the hour but Martin O’Neill followed up with a Mount Sion point.

It was De La Salle that finished the stronger of the sides however and points from Bryan Phelan, Dean Twomey and Paudi Nevin secured De La Salle’s passage to their third county final appearance since 2008.

The second semi final on Sunday evening saw Dungarvan come out on top in another tight game at Fraher Field.

While Dungarvan won the game by three points, they will have to thank their goalkeeper Darren Duggan for the roll he played in this win. He made at least five fantastic saves in this game. Had he been unable to keep the ball out of his net one at least one or two of these occasions, the outcome could have been much different.

The first half of this game proved to be a very close encounter. Maurice O’Gorman and Cormac Curran exchanged early scores in this game and when Jamie Barron and Cormac Curran did likewise before the end of the first quarter the game was not going to have the four gone conclusion that the bookies were seeing the game ahead of it starting.

Points from Jamie Barron and Colm Curran saw the sides tied at three points a piece after twenty two minutes.

On twenty five minutes had a chance for score through both Shane Walsh and Michael O’Gorman but the Old Boro’s defence was able to clear the danger and send the ball up field where Cormac Curran reacted quickest to plant the ball past Conor Ryan in the Fourmilewater goals.

Ryan Donnelly followed up with a Dungarvan point to give them a four point advantage, but Seamus Lawlor hit 1-1 for Fourmilewater inside a two minute spell at the end of the opening thirty minutes to level matters.

Time remained to be played and in this time both sides through Cormac Curran and Craig Guiry traded scores which left the sides locked at 1-5 a piece at the end of the first half.

The second half began as the first had ended. Jamie Barron missed an early free for Fourmilewater and when Justin Walsh at the other end fumbled the ball as he attempted to clear it, Jamie Nagle was able to put the ball over to give his side the lead.

Seamus Lawlor pointed for Fourmilewater on thirty four minutes and just seconds later, Darren Duggan in the Dungarvan goal performed heroics to keep both Jamie Barron and Shane Walsh at bay but was powerless to keep Barron’s second shot at goal from hitting the inside of the net.

Dungarvan hit back with a Shane Kearney point and this was followed up with efforts from Cathal Curran and Gavin Crotty to level the game once more ten minutes after the restart.

Inter county players Jamie Nagle and Shane Walsh swapped scores by the forty-eight minute mark. Gavin Crotty and Cormac Curran edged Dungarvan two in front by the fifty-third minute which Liam Lawlor managed to half when he pointed a ’65 five minutes from time.

With a minute of the hour to play Jamie Barron had the sides all square after he put over a free and Fourmilewater on the hour mark were unlucky not to have gone in front when Craig Guiry, Shane Walsh and Michael O’Gorman all combined but were unable to put the ball past Duggan in the Dungarvan goal.

It was Dungarvan however that finished the stronger of the two sides, and points from Cormac Curran, Ryan Donnelly and Gavin Crotty in added time at the end of the second half helped Dungarvan to a 1-15 to 2-9 victory and a place in their first county final since 1951.

In the two divisions there was both Intermediate and Junior finals to be played this weekend. In the east of the county Portlaw who have been getting better as the year progressed recorded a 1-19 to 3-9 victory over their neighbours Clonea at Kill while at the same venue the Junior final was down for decision where the champions of the last two years clashed.

Butlerstown won last years divisional title but lost out to Ballinameela in the county final after a second replay. They proved too strong for Ballydurn in this years eastern final winning 1-16 to 1-6. Two years ago Ballydurn beat Ballysaggart in the County Final but were relegated after just one year in the Intermediate ranks.

In the west An Rinn beat Cappoquin 2-10 to 0-14 at Fraher Field. An Rinn played Senior as late as 2009 while Cappoquin have been knocking about the latter stages of the intermediate championships in recent years and they must be asking themselves will they ever win the title.

In the Junior final also played at Fraher Field on Saturday evening, the Geraldines needed some late scores to overcome the challenge of Colligan who dropped down from the Intermediate grade at the end of 2011.

Dungarvan and De La Salle meet in the Senior County Final on October 14 in Fraher Field which should have its capacity tested on the day. It will be proceeded by the Junior County Final between Butlerstown and Geraldines which has a 2pm throw in. The intermediate final between An Rinn and Portlaw will take place on the weekend of October 20/21 with Fraher Field again set to stage the game.

County Titles for Saint Anne's and An Rinn

The picturesque village of Ardmore was the setting for last Saturday’s Intermediate and Senior County Finals.

First up was the Intermediate final between An Rinn and Cappoquin were the prize on offer was the new Mamie O’Meara Cup presented in memory of the only Waterford lady to hold lady to win a Senior Camogie All-Ireland medal which she won while playing with Dublin and was also part of the Waterford team beaten in the 1945 senior final against Antrim.

The victors set a mark in the opening half of the game hitting an incredible 1-10 while at the same time conceding just 0-1, with Deirdre Fahey hitting the An Rinn goal and adding four other scores for good measure.
Cappoquin faired better in the second half. They came out of the traps fastest, hitting a point in the fourth minute from Lorraine Bray in the fourth minute of the half. Remarkably, this was to be the only score of the half till the thirtieth minute of the half when Jess Gavin Johnson found the back of the An Rinn net. Deirdre Fahey responded with a point for An Rinn, their only score of the second half and Jennie McCarthy in added time hit the final score of the game, a point for Cappoquin.

The senior game which followed was a repeat of the recent league final which Lismore won by the minimum margin at Fraher Field.

Lismore went into this game in search of a third County Senior final in a row, but did so minus the services of Aisling O’Brien, Grainne Kenneally and Ruth Geoghegan, three massive losses to any team.

A close encounter was envisaged ahead of this game and the players on the field of play did not let those with such expectations down.

In the league section of the championship, when the sides met, the sides drew with Lismore coming out as winners of the second game between the sides to advance to the final while the mid county side advanced to the final after they beat Gaultier in the semi finals some weeks back.

At the end of a very low scoring first half it was Lismore that held a narrow advantage, retiring 0-3 to 0-2 to the good.

The second half really saw the game open up score wise. Saint Anne’s Jenny Simpson had a hugely impressive game here and in the end, it was a goal ten minutes from time from a free struck by the Inter county star from thirty metres which went straight to the Lismore net that was the ultimate difference between two evenly balanced sides as it gave her side a 1-6 to 0-5 lead.

Credit Lismore however, they kept going, but in the end were not able to overtake a Saint Anne’s side who were worthy winners on the day.

Lismore on the day were best served by Aoife Hannon who hit eight of her sides scores, while the winners had impressive performances from Jenny Simpson who finished her afternoons work with 1-2 to her name, Karen Kelly and Zoe O’Donoghue who both hit two points each and Niamh Rockett who finished the game with a point to her name.

County S.H.C. Final teams are known.

Sunday October 14 is D Day in Déise Hurling as De La Salle and Dungarvan clash in the County Senior Hurling Final for the first time.

This follows there wins over Mount Sion and Fourmilewater respectfully in the semi finals over the past weekend.

De La Salle as expected came out on top in their game but the margin between the sides was much closer that most expected, while Dungarvan who went into the game as underdogs against Fourmilewater, they were not to be written off lightly and in the end were worthy winners.

Mount Sion in Saturday evening’s game lead 1-5 to 0-6 at the break and were full value for it, Michael Gaffney hitting the Monastery Men’s goal three minutes from the break.

They remained in touch for the second half and early in the final quarter they added a second goal through substitute Anthony Kirwan.

But in the end, De La Salle were able to call on all their experience winning many underage titles in the last decade as well as two county and provincial titles and in the closing minutes of the game were able to tag on the scores that secured their place in this years final.

DE LA SALLE: Stephen Brenner; Conan Watt, Ian Flynn, Stephen Daniels; Bryan Phelan, Kevin Moran, Eoin Madigan; Eddie Barrett, Dean Twomey; Shane McNulty, Jake Dillon, Paudie Nevin; John Mullane, Jack Kennedy, John Keane. Sub: David Greene for Keane

Darren Duggan was Dungarvan’s hero in the second semi final. The talented net minder made at least five point blank saves to keep Fourmilewater at bay in Fraher Field.

The game burst into life in the last five minutes of the opening half after Cormac Curran goaled to give Dungarvan a 1-3 to 0-3 lead. Ryan Donnelly added a point to extend his sides lead but Seamus Lawlor inside two minutes hit back with 1-1 and with both sides adding scores in first half added time, the sides retired at the break as 1-5 a piece.

The second half began as the first half ended, but when Jamie Barron goaled five minutes after the restart, after Darren Duggan had made excellent saves from Jamie Barron and Shane Walsh it looked as if the Fourmilewater side were going to win.

However, Dungarvan came storming back and at the end of the third quarter were one point up.

As the game drew to its conclusion, the sides were all square after Jamie Barron pointed on fifty-nine minutes.

In added time Fourmilewater had a chance of advancing to a first ever county senior hurling final. They had a chance to hit what could be the insurance point but instead went for a goal and the ball was able to be clear out of the Dungarvan goal mouth and in the time that remained, the Old Boro through Cormac Curran, Ryan Donnelly and Gavin Crotty were able to tag on the scores that secured their passage to a county final for the first time since 1951.
