Deise Girls Search for All-Ireland Glory

Throughout the 1990’s and into the early years of the last decade, to hear that a Waterford team was through to an All-Ireland Ladies Football Ireland was hardly news, so often it was happening.

In 1991, managed by the Current Waterford Senior Hurling Manager – Michael Ryan he put together an exciting and gifted group of players which had a nice blend of experienced players from the 1986 Junior All-Ireland winning team at Croke Park with youth, many of whom were eligible for the counties underage teams that year.

For almost a decade, Kerry had dominated the Ladies Football Scene. There was little or nothing to stop them winning Munster and All-Ireland Finals year in, year out. They were the Kilkenny Senior Hurling team of the day.

In ’91 Waterford shocked Kerry to win the Munster Final, and went on to beat a fancied Laois side in the All-Ireland final. In 1992 these wins were repeated.

The wins encouraged young girls and maybe slightly older girls to take up the game of Ladies Football as clubs began to be formed across the county.

Some brilliant young players were unearthed and many quickly broke into the different inter county teams.

Success followed for all teams. Munster and All-Ireland finals were won at all grades as were National Leagues for the seniors.

Then something happened. The players that broke the mould in 1991 began to retire one by one, and while those tasked to promote the game in Waterford continued to work hard, things began to slip. No longer did the game enjoy the profile it once did.

In recent years however the wheel has began to turn once more and hopefully sooner rather than later it will have turned full circle.

Waterford have won a National League Final. They have appeared in an All-Ireland Intermediate final and these success’ have encouraged a new group of young girls playing Ladies Football to set their sights as high as possible.

This Saturday, Waterford’s under 14 team contests the All-Ireland ‘B’ Final when they take on Cavan at St Brendan’s Park in Birr at 2pm.

Under the guidance of Pat Sullivan, Johnny Troy, Martina Landers and Lindsey Keane, a great deal of work has gone into the preparing the team for this years championship.

They have cast their nets far and wide and put together a panel of 31 players picked from ten clubs across the city and county, from Roanmore in the city to Ballyduff and Ballysaggart in the far west of the county.

Waterford travel to Birr unbeaten in this years championship and will want to extend that run till after this weekend.

Waterford’s first game in this years Munster Championship was against Limerick and resulted in an excellent 6-6 to 2-8 victory.

Next up were Tipperary and again Waterford put in an impressive performance winning 3-10 to 1-7 and secured their place in the Munster Final when they beat Clare again by an impressive margin, 4-13 to 2-6.

Tipperary again provided the opposition in the Munster final. When sides meet twice in the one year in the once competition, it often works out that the side that lost the first game goes on to win the second game, as over confidence often sets in.

However, the Waterford management team had guarded against such happenings and Waterford ran out winners on an even greater margin than they did the first day winning 4-6 to 1-2.

Waterford’s opponents in the All-Ireland semi final were Laois who as expected proved to be Waterford’s toughest opponents in the competition up to this point.

Just three points separated the sides in Waterford’s favour, Waterford winning 1-7 to 1-4.

Waterford’s management team are going into the game with Cavan happy with what has been achieved this year and also happy with the spirit in the camp.

A win for Waterford, while it wont be easy would be great and could start a new era in the history of Ladies Football in Waterford.

Waterford Travel to Aughrim

Waterford Senior Footballers make the journey to Aughrim for second time this year on Saturday, having been paired with the ‘Garden County’ in the first round of the All-Ireland Qualifiers.

When the sides met in the National Football League back in early March, Waterford shocked the home side winning 4-7 to 1-12 with Ballinacourty’s sharp shooter Mark Ferncombe hitting a hat-trick of goals in the first quarter of the game.

Since then much has changed. Waterford ended this years National Football League disappointedly having been expected to be one of the sides challenging for the two promotion spots, while Wicklow ended the campaign with a trip to Croke Park and a place in the third division of the National League in 2013.

Games between the two sides have been close in recent years and on averages Waterford possibly have the upper hand between the sides.

Waterford’s side in many of these games has remained largely unchanged which is a little worrying as it suggests, if we do not know already that there is not a lot of talent up to inter county standard coming through, which does not bode well for Waterford when this present group of players, many of who are in or around the age of 30 decide to call a day to their inter county football days.

Under Mick O’Dwyer, many players in Wicklow came crawling out from under the woodwork to pull on a royal blue shirt and many of those players proved to be fine footballers.

However, since the Waterville man stood down from the Wicklow scene, so too have many of these players. Some are out injured most notably Leighton Glynn who picked up an injury playing against Meath in the Leinster Championship, while others for whatever reason have left the panel which has some in Wicklow asking searching questions.

Some if not all the players brought in to replace those that are missing appear to be fine footballers, something bourn out by they winning this years League final.

Waterford’s last known outing was against Limerick in the first round of the Munster Championship back in May.

At Half time that day, Waterford looked to be in contention as they trailed by just a point but they failed to score in the second half and lost the game 2-12 to 0-7.

What Waterford have managed to do in the meantime remains to be seen.

For the two weeks or so while the Waterford hurlers prepared to play Clare and after some rounds of the club championship were played after the footballers played Limerick some work would have been done. The week after the hurlers game with Clare, little or nothing would have been done as again the players went back to their clubs, buts expected that some work was done in the last few days.

This is far from ideal heading into this weekends game bit for now its something that G.A.A. supports will have to put up with until our championship structures are changed for the better or otherwise.

Waterford have made a number of changes to the team that played Limerick for the game in Aughrim.

Stephen Enright comes in between the posts for Kieran Cotter. Paul Whyte who was selected to play against Limerick but did not start is also named as is more crucially Gary Hurney who returns to the county colours after a suspension and injury. Liam O Lionáin also comes in which is to be welcomed as his pace could well cause trouble for the Wicklow backs who may be forced to either leave him off or to foul him and maybe risk picking up a yellow card or two.

On paper, Waterford have what it takes to win. Will they remain to be seen. If they do, it would be nice if Waterford were to get a home game in the draw for the next phase of the draw as year after year, Waterford are travelling to play in the qualifiers.

WATERFORD team to play Wicklow: Stephen Enright; Maurice O’Gorman, Thomas O’Gorman, Kieran Connery; Tony Grey, Shane Briggs, Wayne Hennessy; Sean Dempsey, Patrick Hurney; Liam Ó Lonáin, Paul Whyte, Cillian O’Keeffe, Mark Ferncombe, Gary Hurney, J.J. Hutchinson.

Three of Eight teams confirmed for Quarter Finals with one series of games to go.

De La Salle turned on the style at Walsh Park on Sunday afternoon to record a comprehensive victory over Roanmore.

The game was over as a contest after just over a quarter of an hour by which time De La Salle held a 3-5 to 0-3 lead with John Mullane, Jake Dillon and John Keane all finding the net.

In the second half the 2008 and 2010 County and Munster Champions through substitute Thomas Kearney added a fourth goal which helped them to a 4-23 to 0-9 victory.

Mount Sion on Friday evening recorded their first win in this year’s championship when they had six points to spare over Tallow at Fraher Field.

Despite first half goals from Sean Ryan and Martin O’Neill, the Monastery Men trailed at the break but in the second half superbly lead by Martin O’Neill and Ian O’Regan, they put in a near faultless performance proving to be the better side and running out winners on a 2-15 to 0-15 scoreline.

At Walsh Park on Friday evening, Ballygunner got their quest to put back to back titles together back on track with a win over Passage.

Goals from Eoin Kelly had helped Passage to a 2-7 to 0-5 lead at the break but with Shane Power in fine form finding the range at regular intervals, the Gunners did enough in the second half to secure a 1-16 to 2-11 victory.

In the first game at Fraher Field on Saturday evening in far from ideal conditions, Fourmilewater even without the services of Shane Walsh in their starting line out proved too strong for last years intermediate champions Dunhill. Leading 0-13 to 0-2 at the break, Fourmilewater let up somewhat in the second half and ran out comfortable winners on a 0-18 to 1-11 scoreline.

In the second game at Fraher Field on Saturday evening, Lismore and Abbeyside ended in stalemate. Lismore at the break lead 0-9 to 0-4 but in the second half Abbeyside faired much better and with time almost up actually lead the Cathedral Town men.

In added time Dan Shanahan looked as if he had won the game for Lismore when he finished to the net but the score was ruled out after the former hurler of the year was adjudged to be in the square before the ball. However seconds later he again used his height and strength in around the square to win a penalty for his side which younger brother Maurice put over the cross bar for a share of the spoils.

The best game of the weekend and possibly the best played in this years championship this year was the final game of the weekend when Ballyduff Upper and Dungarvan clashed at Fraher Field.

In ideal weather conditions, the supporters of both sides and from across West Waterford turned up expecting to see a good game and they were not to be disappointed.

Cormac Curran was to prove to be Dungarvan’s hero in this game hitting thirteen points for his side. For Ballyduff Upper they had a real hero in Adrian Power. The former inter county panel member will have hurling anoraks searching their records to see when a goal keeper last scored three goals in a championship match which Adrian Power did here in his last game for the club before he heads to live in the United States for the foreseeable future. His impressive display was not all about his scoring of goals, one of which was from a penalty and the other two from twenty metre frees. In the second half he went very high to pull a Cormac Curran effort from a free sailing over the crossbar.

With four rounds of the championship played, there is just three teams assured of a place in the knockout stages of the championship, Fourmilewater, Lismore and De La Salle. For the other nine, the results of their games, coupled with that of others, will determine what clubs will reach the quarter final stages of the championship, what teams will secure their senior status for 2013 and what two clubs will have to fight to retain their place.
